Dear Editor,
Thanks you for the bottom of my heart for the article Albers Wants Spay Neuter Clinic In Sudbury.
I am a volunteer for the Greater Sudbury Animal Shelter and I work with the cats – specifically, getting them fixed and finding homes for them. The staff are very helpful.
Alas, they and I can tell you that fewer than 5% of cats are redeemed and that nobody wants an unfixed cat. Nobody.
Working with fellow volunteers from CATS (Cat Adoption Trust Sudbury – formerly Friends of Shelter Pets), we do what we can, but it’s a drop in the bucket.
People want to blame the shelter for not being no-kill. That makes no sense – they are open admission. Without a spay/neuter clinic in Sudbury – that could serve the Rainbow District and beyond – the current situation will never end. The vast majority will have to be euthanized because there aren’t enough homes for them all.
I challenge anyone who opposes an affordable, accessible spay-neuter clinic to do a walk around of the cats section at our shelter and pick out for the staff which of the X% should get to live. Especially the staff that clean, feed, water and pet them.
Please don’t blame the cats for the owner’s lack of income or responsibility.
Do check out the SPCA’s Barrie/New Market Spay Neuter Clinic’s website at http://www.spayneuter.ontariospca.ca where you will find these facts:
•Clinics utilizing this spay/neuter model in the US have reduced shelter admissions and euthanasia by up to 70%!
•Data collected at these clinics shows that 86% of spay/neuter clients have no previous relationship with a veterinarian
Please don’t blame the shelter workers for the problem – that is not only scapegoating, it’s cruel. I can tell you that no one wants to euthanize a friendly, healthy cat who so desperately wants to live and love.
And do check out the Spay Neuter Rainbow District’s website – www.spayneuterrainbow.weebly.com
Let the folks running for local government know you want a spay neuter clinic.
Very sincerely, Jan C Steven
